One on One: Kareemah El-Amin

karmain

Kareemah is an accomplished singer, songwriter, award winning filmmaker, producer, and acclaimed playwright and director. A former devout Muslim, Kareemah accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior on November 17, 2010. Kareemah was raised in the Islamic faith, she was taught, spoke, and prayed in Arabic, and believed and practiced Islamic teachings since birth. After a lifetime of believing and living the teachings of the Quran, the call of Christ prevailed. Following a struggle of 18 months, experiencing a tug of war between her faith in Islam and the pull toward Christianity, a two week fast in petition to GOD led to Him performing a miracle in her life that provided a “clear” decision of peace that surpasses all understanding, confirming Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Encore: What Gospel artists have had an influence on your career?
Kareemah: Prior to becoming a Christian, I never listened to Gospel or Christian music. I heard of BeBe and CeCe Winans along with some of the other mainstream artists. But, know some of the people that have influenced me are Wess Morgan, Israel Houghton and Tasha Cobbs. In terms of my style, I wouldn’t consider it Gospel or Christian, it’s a little bit of both.

Encore: You have such an incredible story, what about the Christian experience stood out to you and how does it contribute to your writing style?
Kareemah: I had a lot of Christian friends prior to converting, I didn’t say anything but something about their lives made me want Christianity. That’s why I tell so many people, it’s not anything that somebody said, it was the way they lived their lives representing Jesus. I’ve been writing for people since I was a young person. I let the spirit of God come over me, I hear things and just let it download. Not only does He download the words and the rhythm, but He downloads the music. I work with the artist and I sing the lines that I want them to play. The artist that I work with now is amazing, he wrote the music to “Never Would Have Made it,” by Marvin Sapp. We just connected when I got with him. I told him that I never worked with a Christian musician that had the anointing and understood what the anointing and Holy Spirit meant. For me walking in the spirit is different than just writing. I write the music and just let God lead me.

Encore: Tell Gospel music fans about the first song you will release from your debut project, “I Have No Tears For Me.”?
Kareemah: The first song we’re going to release is “Walking in Heaven,” it’s an uptempo song about getting Christians out of the mentality that they have to go to Heaven and wait before they experience God’s glory, but that’s not the word. The Bible says, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,” and so my ministry is telling people that you are complete in him.
